ABSTRACT
A simple methodological approach using chemical computation tools to recognize functional
groups responsible for the gases evolved from thermogravimetric
analysis coupled to a mass quadrupole (TGA-QMS) of asphaltenes extracted from a venezuelan heavy oil residue is proposed. The methodology was applied to functional
groups responsible to generation of SO2. The
theoretical methodology is summarized in the following
steps: a) Proposal
of possible functional
groups feasible in asphaltenes analyzed,
b) Energy calculations,
using Computational Chemistry methodologies, of the energy bonds
associated with the proposed functional
group. c) Calculation of the temperature required to match the heat energy of the molecular
system with the bond energy dissociation of functional group. The approach developed suggests the presence of sulfonic
groups in the structure of the asphaltene subject of the present study.
